Through a partnership with multiple organizations and Federal funding, older adults can call 311 as a simple point of contact for vulnerable seniors (55+) needing access to healthy food and a daily wellness check.
Fraud protection
- Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: The Federal Government has put together information on COVID-19 fraud scams. As COVID-19 continues to spread globally, watch out for associated scams. Fraudsters want to profit from consumers’ fears, uncertainties and misinformation. Fraudsters are exploiting the crisis to facilitate fraud and cyber crime.
- COVID19 Specific Frauds and Scams: Created by Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario and CanAge, listed are the top 10 scams and frauds currently being used to prey on older adults during the COVID19 crisis.

A number of grocery stores have updated some of their policies for shoppers, return policies, and flyer delivery (solely online), and allowing front line workers priority to enter.
- As of May 4, Monday to Friday from 8–9 a.m., Costco will temporarily implement special operating hours for members who are 60 and older or who have a physical disability. The pharmacy will also be open during this hour.
- Starting May 4, all Costco shoppers will be required to wear face masks. The mask must cover their mouth and nose at all times while inside the store. This can be a store-bought mask, or a home made mask. The requirement will not apply to children under the age of 2 or to anyone who is unable to wear a mask or face covering due to medical conditions.
- Effective Friday, April 3, Costco will allow no more than two people to enter the warehouse with each membership card.
- Costco is temporarily allowing priority access to Costco members who are healthcare workers and first responders such as police officers, EMTs and firefighters. Healthcare workers and first responders who present a Costco membership card and official identification of their role, will be allowed to move to the front of any line to enter the warehouse.
St. Norbert Farmers’ Market has an online market system allows you to browse a real-time product list from over 45 vendors, pre-paying for your shopping bag before you head to the market.
- Pickup will be by a drive-through option, or by coming into the canopy for your order, where vendors will be found.
- Limiting the number of people entering at any given time.
- Many vendors are offering pre-order and pre-pay. Check the vendor page for contact information. Some are offering to deliver products to your car.
Walmart is temporarily dedicating 7–8 am every day for seniors (ages 65+), the disabled, and those with vulnerable health conditions.

- Offering contact-free curbside pickup for online orders (at select stores).
- Has temporarily updated their Return Policy, effective immediately.

Winnipeg Harvest is still providing hampers, but does not have a delivery option. They will allow a friend to pick up a donation on a person’s behalf, as long as they bring a signed letter from the recipient, as well as the recipient’s Manitoba Health card.

* One large, pre-packaged Food Hamper per registered address every 4 Weeks.
The larger hamper is intended to provide support for a 10-14-day period, the same amount of time as the recommended quarantine period. Food banks may help provide supplementary food to help families and individuals stretch their budgets, however it is not expected to meet all food needs.
Hampers will include a selection of non-perishable items including Canned Soup, Canned Vegetables, Pasta and Sauce, Dry Lentils, Bouillon cubes, Oatmeal, Rice, Peanut Butter, Canned Meat, Pancake Mix, Crackers, Cookies, and other items as available.
There will be no special items like gluten free, no daily extras, and no other perishable items, pet food, diapers, feminine hygiene, etc.
Hamper will be roughly the size of 3 plastic grocery bags.
